Chicken?!

As an adult I still have vivid memories of gathering eggs as a child. In my mind’s eye I see the terse glare from some hens when they saw me approaching. I would cautiously slide my hand into the nest to extract the eggs that had recently been laid. I quickly realized that these girls meant business and a firm peck was coming my way.  It really made me question the expression that equates fear with “being chicken.” I was the one who felt fear- so am I the chicken or the human?

What Did You Call Me?!

If you have ever been around chickens, you can appreciate their dynamic personalities! I’m not a “chicken whisperer,” so I can’t say if they are intentionally trying to be funny. The way they cock their head and the expressiveness in their eyes does facilitate some humorous interpretation.

Do We Know You?

Cows are very quiet and peaceful creatures who are quite content to graze with one another until someone new comes along - be it a cat, groundhog, or human. Their focus shifts. No longer interested in munching the grass, the girls poke up their heads and can’t resist lumbering over to see who has joined them. Hello.

After a winter with dry hay in the barn, this golden girl is ready to enjoy the warmth of the spring wind through her hair. How can she resist the delectable fresh grass.  Yumm, so juicy and delicious!

World Isn't Just Black and White

The World Isn't Always Black and White

When sunlight hits a Holstein cow just the right way, the black becomes rich shades of blue, and the white reflects the contrasting colours. Nature’s way of reminding us that the world is rarely black and white.

Fall Leaves 2.jpg

Last Dance

This painting was inspired by a walk along a trail in Algonquin Park during a crisp fall morning. Capturing the shifting of the season with the gentle trickle of water serenading the leaves as they float and dance to the ground to create a colourful fall quilt before winter.

North Shore.jpg

North Shore

The unmanicured shoreline of Northern Ontario has such wonderful stories to tell about strength and perseverance. The cracked rocks are unlikely yet amazing hosts to an abundance of growth that ranges from strange-coloured moss to mighty pines. Pull ashore and venture in for a visit.

Northern Summer

If you have ever been to Northern Ontario, you will recognize the colour and scene captured in this painting. A secluded spot on the lake—crunchy moss covering the ground on a bright July afternoon. Nestled in a well-baked rock stands a single pine. One that has wrestled with the wind for years. At it's base is a juniper companion spreading wind torn branches across the crevice. But today isn't about the strong winds. Instead, you can hear the birds chirping and feel the breeze on your face as you paddle through the cool waters. Peace.

Rock and Pine

Northern Pine

The pine trees of Northern Ontario are an inspiring force of nature. Somehow able to grow in the most improbable places, the pine tree offers us lessons in perseverance and grace.

The beautiful setting of lake, rock, tree and sky creates a scene that makes us long to be back in Northern Ontario.

Cottage Boats

A Short Rest

The glistening, warm coloured boats rest in the undergrowth against the weathered,  moss-speckled rock.  A gentle reminder that Mother Nature is offering a short, warm reprieve to this cooler, northern landscape.

Winter Birch

Winter Warmth

The warmth of sunlight reflected on the peeling birch bark creates a contrast in warm and cool tones. A perfect example of what is best about Canadian winters. An opportunity to enjoy the fresh cool air, as you are warmed by the sun’s glow.

Sap Is Running

Signs of Spring

This tasty painting reminds us of the hope of the spring sugaring-off. As the days get warmer, and the nights remain cool, the sap in Canadian maple country starts to flow. The use of warm and cool tones brings out the flavour of the scene, as the sap drip, drip, drips into the bucket. Yum!

Nature's Quilt

Leaves in blazing reds, oranges and yellows foretells the end of summer and the onset of cool nights and shorter days. By playing with the complementary colours the red-orange leaf becomes the accent on the cool patchwork of leaves below.

Otter Bay

Part of French River Provincial Park, Otter Bay shows the wholeness of nature. An autumn landscape showing the rugged rocks worn by water and time flowing into the river. The resilient plants rooting in every nook and cranny – preparing themselves for the winter to come.

Summer Migration

This flamboyant flamingo floats on the calm lake in northern Ontario. A painting of contrasts – the deep, rich green of the lake and trees are a perfect contrast for the lush pink of the Flamingo. The flamingo set in a lake where real flamingos wouldn’t dare dip their toes challenges your brain to re-think. As you gaze on the painting you can almost hear the quiet that surrounds the bather as she soaks in nature’s calm.

Summer Migration II

The whimsical fun of this scene is what this painting is all about. The flamboyant flamingo looks like he is heading south for the winter and his passenger is ready to calmly go wherever that may be. The combination of colours and settings gives the observer a sense of fun and serenity all at the same time – ahhh summer!

Little Fisherman

Fishing can be serious business so this little guy needed some well-deserved rest from the worries of whether the fish would like the bait. But wait, will the fish be nibbling on his toes? This painting is a gentle reminder of days in our youth when our big worries were hungry fish.

How's The Water

Someone always needs to dip a toe into the lake to tell those waiting on shore what temperature the water is. This painting is the eternal debate… do I want to go in? I’m not that hot… do I want to go in? What do you think? Do I want to go in… you decide.

Double Time.jpg

Double Time

Synchronicity. This painting depicts both the rate of the stroke, and the art of working with a partner as though you were one. The colours reflected in the water speak of the exhilaration of getting in synch and pulling together to get to the finish line– synchronized effort and results.

Race Ready

This painting displays the symmetry and strength in rowing, as a rower achieves “oneness” with the oars, water and boat. The rower feels balanced and calm as he’s ready to fly over the water, stroke by stroke.
